masthead #50 – skating

I cannot skate very well at all. We went skating last year with one of my good friends, and as she pirouetted her way around like a lithe figure skater, Jason took a solitary bone-cracking fall on the ice and then skated the rest of the evening without incident, while I shuffled and fell my way around the ice feeling as though both my ankles were about to snap in half, and tiny tots speed-skated around me. We still had a blast though and plan on doing it again this year.

How about you? Can you skate?

  1. I can’t really stop when I skate. Which wouldn’t be such a big deal, except for the fact that I played ice hockey for college and you kind of NEED to know how to stop when you skate. I got really good at running into the boards when needed.

Even worse, is that I wasn’t the worst player/skater on the team!

  2. I am a TERRIBLE skater and as a result I really don’t enjoy it. I just don’t find it fun to take scary little baby steps while clinging to a railing and waiting for my feet to slide out from under me. And if I try anything more ambitious, I end up flat on my ass.

  3. I’m not a very good skater. I get the same ankle burn and feel like I will surely die. I take my kids to outdoor rinks so I can just go around with them in my boots. The masthead is really cute.

  4. I can skate (I grew up in a town where kids were playing hockey by the time they could walk, and we lived on a river – ready-made skating rink!), but I have the same problem as Sarah. I can’t stop. I kind of spin in a circle. I tried teaching myself how to do a “hockey stop,” like where you turn your feet sideways, but I’m too chicken. And I never figured out how to do a t-stop; that’s how I end up going in circles. Unfortunately, Ryan doesn’t skate, so if James is going to learn how I’ll have to be the one to teach him. Poor kid.

  5. I can skate a bit. Don’t get to do it much now living in Seattle. There is a picture of me from when we lived in upstate New York in our iced over front yard with skates on my feet, I was 3 and a half at the time. See my dad played NCAA Division 1 hockey so we were all practically born with skates on our feet. I wish I had more opportunity to skate, I always enjoy it so much when I get to.
