masthead #46 – playground

My favorite part of the playground were the swings, where my best friend and I would sit right next to other, slowly twist our swings together until we couldn’t move, have someone give us a push, and then sit back and see how fast we’d unwind. This was great fun until the time I threw my head back in joyous giddiness and promptly cracked it against a support beam. This is how I gained the power to retain every line from the movie Major League.

What’s your favorite thing about playgrounds?

  1. I do not have good childhood memories of playgrounds (I got a concussion on the monkey bars once and some girl who was on the opposite side of a teeter totter as I was fell off and had to go to the hospital). But, I went to my nephew’s birthday party at a park last weekend and my 3 1/2 year old niece wanted me to push her “super high” in the swing. We must have been on that swing for twenty minutes and she just kept talking to me. It was the longest, deepest conversation I’ve ever had with her and it was great.

    Maybe I like swings.

  2. I used to always crack my shins on the ladder for the slide and it was PAINFUL! So that kind of sucked. I was always bigger than my one friend I used to play with at the playground so I HATED the see-saw (way to make a 7 year old feel like a fat cow!).

However, that spinny merry-go-round thingie was always fun. We used to love running to get it going and then jumping on mid-spin.

And the swings were always fun. That’s probably because I never hit my head on anything…

  3. Youch. My friend Erik banged his head on the ground while mountainbiking and started speaking Dutch. Which would be a lot weirder if not for the fact that it’s his first language…..

    (Thanks for your condolences)
