I made it 14 days without ranting
2010 is still going well, but Work 2010 is like a terminal patient whom you’ve already said goodbye to a dozen times, and yet it won’t let go and STEP INTO THE LIGHT. I was told January was the slowest time of year at work, and I happily compiled a list of minor tasks to do during this time and now that the time is at hand, I realize it was all a lie. I have three proposals due next week, which at first seems overly busy but doable, until I realized Monday is a mandatory unpaid day off, so OK, three proposals due within four days. But wait, the leadership team (who signs off on all proposals) will be on a retreat starting on Thursday, so that means three proposals due within two days, and now we’re officially entering Insanity Town. THEN I realize most of the guys will be busy in a meeting Wednesday afternoon, so that leaves a day and a half. To do three proposals. One of which I have not even received yet. ARGH. This is why people drink.
The Vikings play on Sunday, and Jason and I have been talking about it with an equal mix of excitement and dread. Yes, they’re playing well and yes, we should be able to win, but we both know in our hearts that this is the Vikings, man. We are purposely not getting our hopes up because the heartache of 1998 is still with us, to the point that if one of us said, out of the blue, “He hadn’t missed a kick ALL YEAR!” the other would immediately understand and be driven into a bout of grumpy despair.
I’m going to try to listen to all of my CDs this year (all 90 of them) to decide if I should import them to iTunes or sell them. I pulled one from the beginning of my collection and one from the end (they’re alphabetized, naturally) and as I listened to Fever to Tell by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, I kept stabbing the off button on my car stereo because man: too screamy. The screaminess noticeably lessened with each track, so that by track 9 I could listen to the entire song, and by track 11 I actually hit the repeat button. But tracks 1-8: I would’ve driven my car off the road to avoid listening to them.
Are there certain songs that you refuse to listen to because they make you want to punch something? I have many (like nearly every song of Kenny Chesney’s [nothing personal, Kenny] and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Date With the Night), but now that I’m typing this, I’m drawing a blank. On the flip side, do you have any songs that you could listen to a million times without tiring of them? I like: Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley, Unchained Melody by The Righteous Brothers, Dragula by Rob Zombie (don’t ask), and Right Now by Van Halen.

Ugh. Gary Anderson. The one sports figure name that I will always remember. Poor guy…I mean, really, he had a great season, but he’ll always be remembered as the guy that missed the ONE kick that mattered.
I’m with you on wanting to be excited for the Vikings on the one hand, but wanting to keep my expectations realistic for a MN sports team on the other.

I’m a Broncos fan, so that means no matter how well they do, I never try to get to hopeful because I know I’ll just be disappointed. So I feel your pain, but hope you do well.
I know there are songs that drive me bonkers, but I can’t think of any right now. If I come up with one I’ll be back.

Oh, Jeff Buckley’s version of Hallelujah is just my favorite. And has been on my mind a lot lately, because my kids have been obsessively watching the first Shrek movie, in which they butcher that song. I don’t know who sings it, but oh my God, I can’t even sit through it, it is so bad. And they even leave out some of the lyrics! *ahem* Anyway, yeah, Jeff’s version is THE VERSION. The end.

“Mandatory unpaid day off”? WTF? That’s not cool. I’m having the same problem with all of my proposals due next week. Too many proposals, too little time.
I never, ever get sick of All We Are by Matt Nathanson, Criminal by Fiona Apple, or Welcome Home (Sanitarium) by Metallica. Well, most Metallica songs I can listen to on repeat, actually.
That All I Wanna Do song by Sheryl Crow makes me want to punch someone. Hate.

I will always, always sing along with “Midnight Train to Georgia.”

I could listen to “Bizzarre Love Triangle” by the New Order on and on. I would stab myself with q-tips if I ever have to hear “Who Let the Dogs Out” at another sports stadium again. I mean, why that song!? WHY?

Oh, Right Now by Van Halen takes me right back to 8th grade and clear Pepsi. Those were the days. Songs I can listen to over and over: Starship “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us”, Carly Simon “You’re So Vain”, 4 Non Blondes “What’s Up” There are many more, likely from the 90’s, too many to name here.

I can’t listen to that It’s the Climb song by Miley Cyrus. It is everything I hate, combined into one song.

Unchained Melody is classic! I also love: Drift Away by Dobie Gray, Crimson & Clover by Joan Jett, and (forgive me) Fergalicious by Fergie. In my defense, I only listen to Fergalicious when I work out. It’s the BEAT, I swear.

Whenever I hear “Bubba Shot the Jukebox,” I crank it up and smile. I just can’t help it. It’s a guaranteed three and a half minutes out of any funk I have gotten myself into.
Oh, the Vikes. I just can’t watch. I’ll cheer for them, but I just can’t do it. Fortunately, we’re going to be out of town this weekend, so I don’t think it will be an option anyway. But, ummm, don’t get your hopes up, okay? (Minnesota teams just let you down over and over and over again…)
P.S. My love for Favre is fleeting and lasting only the length of this football season, but GO BRETT!!

I swear I got hives just reading about that proposal situation. And also the mandatory unpaid day off. Ugh. Good luck!

Songs on the hate list: Anything by Chris LeDoux. Anything by Kenny Chesney (other than Me and You which, oddly enough, was our first dance at our wedding). Anything by Korn (screamy and barky and growly).
Love list:
Pretty much all your fav songs (though I can live w/o Van Halen),
Johnny I Hardly Knew Ya by the Dropkick Murphys,
anything Springsteen,
Holding Out for a Hero, Footloose Soundtrack

Oh, and something else I hate: any song that makes a blatant, cheesy play on your emotions. Examples: Christmas Shoes (or Red Shoes or whatever about the kid buy shoes for his dying mom), Temporary Home by Carrie Underwood, and anything by Martina McBride.
If I want to be emotionally manipulated, I will go hang out with my mother-in-law, thank you very much.

I’m going to try to be no where near a TV tomorrow so that I’m not tempted to watch the game. I’m still sad for Gary Anderson and for my hopes that died that day.
Songs I turn up to 11!!:
Waterloo by ABBA
If I Can’t Change Your Mind by Bob Mould
See The World by Gomez
Solsbury Hill by Peter Gabriel
Songs that make my ears bleed:
Anything by Sheryl Crow
Anything by Led Zepplin
