Pieces and bits

Filed under: Miscellaneous — Shauna @ 8:38 am

There is hardly anyone in the office today. After lunch, I predict there will be maybe three of us left to run around the halls and pirate our coworkers’ office supplies.

I need t-shirt ideas. For some reason, 98% of my t-shirts are huge on me, because I inexplicably insist on buying men’s t-shirts in small sizes and calling it a day. (I have a form-fitting woman’s Twins t-shirt and every time I wear it I am amazed: “Look at my waist! I have a figure!”) I especially need cheap t-shirts I can wear camping. Bonus points if the slogan or image has to do with camping. Thoughts? Links?

This morning, as Shorty was snoozing on the bed with us, Sunny was over-the-top belligerent that we were not feeding her, throwing decibel-ratcheting meows from phantom locations like a skilled voice thrower. Shorty was getting increasingly annoyed with her (join the club, pooch) and finally heaved a giant sigh as if to say, “Jeezus, cat! Shut it!” and wormed his way underneath the bedcovers to hide his head.

I bought the most perfect bag of Rainier cherries last weekend. They were really expensive, but ohmigod. I had some at work and felt like Gollum clutching the bag to my chest. I plan on bringing the rest camping this weekend, and this is one of those times I’m glad Jason doesn’t eat any fruit. Like Joey on Friends, Shauna doesn’t share food!

The car saga is over (I didn’t even tell you guys that after everything else, the alternator then went out. The mechanic felt so bad for me he put it in for $130) but I am already compiling a list of possibilities so when the car dies, I can preferably torch it and walk away from its flaming remains to the nearest car dealership. So, I am looking to spend about $10,000 on something less than 5 years old with less than 50,000 miles (because, in case you missed it, I hate car payments) and want something that has a ton of room for camping supplies, the dog, and us. I like the idea of a small SUV like the Saturn Vue, but does anyone else have any recommendations?

Has anyone used that Off! fan? I am suspicious of its performance. It seems too easy, like the crappy citronella candles I buy in the hopes I won’t have to shower in bug spray but then disappoint me. Yay? Nay?

Oh, and because I am a giant hypocrite, I am now on Twitter. Follow me there if you’d like. (picklesdimes)

Have a fun and safe 4th!

  2. We have a Rav and love it. Lots of room for stuff.

Also, friends of ours have an Element and those things TOTALLY ROCK. They love it and there is TONS of room.

    GL with the car!

    Mmmm good cherries :)

  3. Our building is pretty empty today too (Canada Day was inconveniently on a Wednesday this year).

I really like the fit of Roots t-shirts – they often have nature themes too: http://canada.roots.com/women_tees_tanks/womensTeesAndTanks,default,sc.html

  4. A Civic is probably too small for you, but we LOVE ours. It has a shocking amount of trunk space. We jammed so much crap in there when we moved cross country, it was unbelievable. And the back seat folds down to create even more space. So maybe it’s worth checking out? Ours was three years old, had 23,000 miles on it, and cost about 13k. I’m sure you could get one that’s a bit older and has a few more miles on it for under 10k. Plus it gets great gas mileage and is super reliable.

  5. Check out “threadless tees”…funny and inexpensive.

  6. Ok thing the first, before I bought my new car in September I had a 98 Honda CR-V and loved it to pieces! Currently my brother is driving it and paying me monthly. He loves it too. So I say CR-V.

And thing the second, I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT YOU ARE ON TWITTER!!! Now I have to get a damn twitter account. GAH!!!

  7. Oh and thing the third, some day you should come to Washington where they grow Rainier Cherries and buy them just picked. Seriously.

  8. Old Navy tshirts seems to veer constantly into camping territory, for whatever reason.

For comfort, though, try Life Is Good (BARF!) brand t-shirts. Far and away the softest and most comfy.

  9. I wish I could remember the site I found a t-shirt for A. that said: Little Lebowski Urban Achievers. I was SO PROUD of myself for that one.

I know your are probably looking for something a bit bigger, but damn if I am not happy with my ‘06 civic. We use it to go car camping and fishing with the dogs all the time without space being an issue.

However. This month I will be paying over $800 on that car, between a car payment (hate!), incurance, and all teh 60K mile tune up BS. HOLY SHIT.

  10. I just bought a 2006 Camry for $14000.00 and I love it! It has a HUGE trunk – big enough to fit both mine and my husband’s bikes without putting the seats down. Also, Toyotas are super, super reliable!

  11. i’m another civic-driver here, so i am FULLY on the honda bandwagon. so reliable! mine has 120k miles on it and the most expensive things i’ve ever needed were the big tuneups every 40k miles or so.

i got my civic when it was… hmm, 2 or 3 yrs old, with just 33k miles, for i think $10.5k, so i’d think if you upgraded to an suv but went w/slightly more miles and/or years, you could stick at that price point?

  12. Big fan of Jeep Cherokees. My brother in law has one with a hitch, so we got this awesome hitch mount bike rack for it and now we can take our bicycles when we go camping. Enough cargo space for camping gear, four people, and three dogs. We like it better than the massive pick-up the mister drives.

I like Urban Outfitters for t-shirts, although I usually end up buying the men’s shirts because I think they have better stuff written on them.

  13. I totally love Rainier cherries, even if it pains me to pay that much, they are totally worth it. But I am totally with you about not sharing.

  14. Sadly, I don’t understand the cherry love. And I adore fruit. LOVE it. But cherries? They’re just too much. I can buy the Rainiers for slightly less than a mortgage payment because they’re local, and I don’t. If someone can explain the intense cherry love, maybe I’ll understand.

What I do understand is a GOOD CAR. Because that’s a must. Chip has a civic and LOVES it. Everyone in my immediate family owns a Honda. It’s some kind of weird tradition or something. We’d been bucking the trend until we got Chip his car and I seriously think that Winston was PROUD of us. For buying a Honda. When it was my time to get a new car (small SUV), we looked at the CRV’s, but couldn’t find one for the right price. I’m not saying that they aren’t worth it (because they’re great cars), but the used CRV’s can cost as much as a NEW other SUV. With a warranty. So that’s what we did. I’m sure you’ll be able to negotiate a great deal, considering how badly the dealers want to sell a car, ANY car, these days. Good luck!

That was a long comment. I think I’m still coming off my Masthead Winner high or something.

  15. I don’t have answers to any of your questions (except, of course, buy a Westy). I’m just here to say I’m so *happy* for you that you’re camping, because now you’ll have blog fodder. Because, really, that’s what the activities in life are for: providing content for the blogs.

  16. I’m not sure they’re out there for under 50k miles / $10,000, but we love-love-love our Honda CRV. Inappropriately love it.

As for shirts, I like the Cherokee essential tees from Target. They often go on sale for $6.99 each, but even at the regular price of $9.99, they’re not bad :D

  17. Heh – you’re lucky Sunny just yeowls when she wants to be fed. Luna will climb onto the bed and sink her teeth into any exposed flesh.
