Lap dog

He’s a little too big (32 lbs.) but that doesn’t stop him from crawling into my lap for a good-night hug right before he goes to his kennel for the evening. He does this every night, for as long as we let him. I’d let him do it all night, but there’s that whole requirement I have of “getting 7+ hours of sleep so I can still greet myself in the morning with black under-eye circles.”

He really is a good dog. He’s being better and better about sticking downstairs on his blanket, rawhide bone hanging out of his mouth like Groucho’s cigar to watch TV with us. We’re looking forward to the time that he can be totally trusted with the cats and one of us doesn’t have to sprint after him every time he wanders out of the room.

And my heart melts every time Jason talks to him and Shorty listens respectfully, thumping his tail in agreement the whole time because yes, he IS a good boy.

P.S. In case you were wondering what kind of weirdo household we live in, I am wearing shorts.

  1. Too cute.

My best friend had a Rottie who when he was a puppy could sit (and fit) on your lap but when he was 185 lbs still liked the lap. So if you were sitting on the sofa, he would back up (think a 18 wheeler backing up) and put his butt on you lap with his back paws in the air. He loved that!

  2. Ahh…Minnesota. Where the weather is such for most of the year that you want to wear shorts and a sweatshirt at the same time. ;-)

Shorty is totally adorable, and I’m glad he found a good home with you guys!

  3. I’m madly in love with your dog. And I think 32lbs is just on the border of still being able to be a lap dog :-P . What a cutie!

  5. Hey, I would love a 32-pounder. I have a 60-pound greyhounds that thinks she is a lap dog. Shorty is so cute!!

  7. I just snorted my coffee at your P.S.

What a good boy! I’d love to see Jason talking to Shorty and Shorty grinning up at him. I’d melt a little, I think.

Glad to hear he is starting to find a good routine. The family is doing well!

  8. What a great looking woofer. 32lbs is totally still lap dog territory in my opinion.

Bear has a similar nightly routine, except he crawls all up in our grill: Once Flibberty or I get to a prone position he climbs on our chests and gets all face to face, and sometime even sticks a paw on our mouth, as if to say… ‘don’t speak, let’s just have this moment’. Luckily he only weighs about 12 lbs so it does not cause any lasting injury to us… typically.

  9. That dog is adorable and so frickin well mannered… we have had our two dogs for five years and neither of them can do any these things and one we have had since he was 6 weeks old… SIGH!

  11. You are both utterly adorable. BTW, I have two nearly 100 lb (each) dogs that still think they are lapdogs, so get used to it.
