Blog entry on a stick

Filed under: BACON!, Miscellaneous, The Thing — Shauna @ 11:05 am

So, we went to the Great Minnesota Get Together (the state fair) this weekend. Let’s start off easy, OK?

First off, Spam, the great Minnesota staple.

Now how about some Norwegian hotdish on a stick? (Jason’s mom tried it. It was deep-fried meatballs and tater tots. Mmmmm.)

OK, let’s dive into some pickle rollups:

Now, let’s try my absolute favorite: deep-fried alligator. I thought about taking a picture of the nuggets and the gator-shaped fries but then thought, “Screw it, I’m starving.”

You just know good things are about to happen when you see this:

This thing was to die for. Bacon on a stick caramelized with syrup. YES, PLEASE.

Photobucket

This thing, not so much. Stupid chocolate-covered bacon with salt. GROSS. And overpriced. It never happened, OK? IT NEVER HAPPENED.

Later, I visited the butterfly house and got a “tattoo”:

Then The Thing got ready for the Brad Paisley concert:

And finally, for Shelly:

MMMMMMM.

Final food total (over 9 hours):

- Alligator nuggets with gator-shaped fries
- Half of a chocolate malt
- One bite of the chocolate-covered bacon
- One Sweet Martha’s chocolate chip cookie that I paid a stranger $2 for because I really only wanted ONE cookie, not the giant cup or bucket
- Half of a Big Fat Bacon
- Two root beers
- Two Cokes
- Half a bag of mini donuts

(I actually feel I showed some restraint this year.)

  3. Ha! I was right about the bacon snacks. I must be a bacon connoisseur. I want some of the syrup kind right now.

  4. Deep Fried Spam Curds? Scare me. However, a poster for Deep Fried Spam Curds? Sort of awesome.

  5. Wow. I gained five pounds just reading this post. Also, if it never happened, you shouldn’t have taken a photo!

  6. Yay! I’ve been looking forward to this post for DAYS. So very disappointed in the chocolate covered bacon. It had…potential? The pickle dog sounds interesting and I want a hotdish on a stick!

  9. Tessie,

I totally thought of you when we saw the Hotdish on a Stick booth. :) And I never did find the frozen pickle pushup booth, which is probably a good thing.

  11. Hot dish on a stick!!! That’s the bestest idea ever. I may be going to the fair next weekend, if I do I’m looking for that.

I can’t believe that pickle place is selling Kool Aid for $2. What a ripoff!

  12. Wait, really? This stuff is for real? I was admiring your cleverness, making it all up. You would be SO BORED by state fairs in the Northeast.

  14. Somehow I am glad that chocolate-covered bacon doesn’t taste all that great. No need to combine my two basic food groups.

  15. This looks to be an all-around, perfect day.

  16. I am totally baffled by all of this. I think that maybe I will have to make a trip to Minnesota sometime to see it for myself. This Texas girl still doesn’t understand hotdish.

  17. Dude. Our sad Washington State fair is put to SHAME by your fair. And your fair has better hair.
