Is 10:00 too early for lunch?

Filed under: Miscellaneous — Shauna @ 10:12 am

Seriously, is it? What if I have yummy leftover fajitas for lunch? What then?

A coworker brought a foster dog into work today. I want her. She’s a pit bull and gorgeous. The coworker told everyone to approach her slowly, as she was in a house where she didn’t get any interaction or socialization, and as a result, she’s scared of everything. I offered her my hand and sat down, and after a few minutes, she came over and started licking my face. According to the coworker, I have “an aura” that dogs like. Ha ha - joke’s on her. I’m a cat person!

We had dinner last night with my two aunts. One of them had her old Cadillac break down after 267,000 miles. Turns out the bottom of her car rusted out and the engine dropped. Now she’ll have to drive her “older” car - a Buick with 394,000 miles. Good lord.

I really wish I could go back in time and tell my 8th grade self to pay more attention to learning how to sew in Home Ec rather than focusing all of my energy on making latch hook rugs featuring unicorns. For that skill is not useful at ALL when I try to fix a seam in Jason’s shirt and end up handing something back to him that resembles Frankenstein’s forehead.

I am now attempting to knit a sweater. Estimated completion date: July of Retirement Age. Send help.

Jason and I have been watching the UFC fights lately. I love hearing all the fighters’ nicknames, and last night, one of the guys had the nickname Jason “The Athlete” MacDonald. Um, isn’t that sort of obvious? I mean, that would be a fun nickname for an overweight accountant, but for a well-conditioned athlete? It should be something ironic or fearsome, like Jason “The Accountant” MacDonald. Am I right?

We’re going to the library this weekend. I haven’t been to a library in YEARS (Half Price Books owns my soul). Do you have any recommendations for me? I don’t like chick lit, but I’m open to pretty much anything else. Thanks!

  1. Yum, fajitas.
Don’t you know that animals love you when you want them to go away? I hate cats, and they’re always entwining themselves around me. Their owners are all, “How sweet,” and I’m like, “Your cat is doing this because it is the devil’s henchman and wants to make me suffer endless itchy eyes and sneezes.”

  2. Oh, dear lord. I am still wiping tears away from the imagery of 8th-grade Shauna hunched over and working furiously on a (an?) unicorn latch hook rug. Oh, I am not kidding. Tears are starting toll down my cheeks.

  3. Are you on Goodreads? Because that is the best place to find book recommendations.

  4. Book recommendations, I can do that. First, let me tell you that the library is awesome. I love the library, anywhere. I got rid of Netflix because they library had just as good of a selection of movies, but they were FREE! Libraries rank right up there with the greatest inventions ever.

Okay, now the book I think you should read post haste is “Love is a Mix Tape” by Rob Sheffield. It will make you laugh, cry, wonder why the 90’s ever had to end . . . you get the picture. Try it, PLEASE!

  5. HA HA! Great post. And also, that is a LOT of miles. She must have been driving those cars forever!! I’ve had mine for almost 7 years and it hasn’t hit 100K yet!

  7. If you want to send Homer into fits of laughter, just remind him that I was a finalist for the Home Ec award in grade 8. We have an overflowing basket of items that need mending that are a testament to the fact that I did not retain any of my sewing skills. In other news, I bought Lisa a latch hook kit for her birthday and I have done roughly 1/3 of it.

  8. Hey,
If you and Jason have been watching UFC fighting, than you need to check it out in person. I was horrified that I actually enjoyed watching people beat up on each other. I couldn’t believe I actually enjoyed watching it.

  9. I say lunch can happen any time between 10 and 1 but then again I am pregnant so all I want to do is eat and eat and eat…

Also, did you ever think the pit bull was licking you because you have cats? Here’s my thinking - pit bull ” yum yum yum she tastes like my favorite cat treats yum yum yum” OF COURSE I am kidding.

I like to check out the new books section at our library. They always have the latest stuff and it is to snag a book that just came out (whether it is a cook book, a self help book or a fiction novel.) Just to see the hype is all about.

  10. 10:00 is never too early for lunch. But then, I’ve always said that I eat with the third graders.

    Ooh! Book recommendations!

    “Otherwise Engaged” by Suzanne Finnamore
“I Feel Bad About My Neck” Nora Ephron
    “Hold Tight” Harlen Coben
“Devil in the White City” Erik Larsen
and of course, “Peace Like a River” and “So Brave Young and Handsome” by Leif Enger, but you knew that. : )

  11. Straight Man by Richard Russo. I don’t know why that came to mind, but I read it like 5 years ago and I still think it was one of the funniest damn books I ever read.

  12. Marley and Me ? ? I know you are cat person, but …. great story!

OMG what great news … i wonder if my Saturn can last that long? My husband just got rid of his mom’s car and it didn’t even have a digit for the 100,000 mark - what is with that?

You make my day everytime I read your entries!

  13. Now that I’m pregnant, lunch time is anytime I can shove something into my mouth, no matter what the clock says.

My camry has 137,000 miles on it and I’ll probably get another 100,000 now that it has a new transmission.

oh god, now I want fajitas. THANKS A LOT.

  14. I had a chicken salad sandwich for breakfast this morning…because I wanted to. So you can eat lunch any time you want to! I enjoy James Patterson’s books — they’ve got mystery, crime/drama, humor, romance…everything a girl could want. :)

  15. Dude, I wish I had taken Home Ec at all…

  16. The latch hook rugs? FANTASTIC.

And you are a far better person than I, to be attempting A SWEATER. I’ve been knitting for five YEARS and I’ve only ever made scarves and hats. That’s it.

  17. I started a sweater two years ago. I haven’t even finished the front yet. Instead, I’ve become mildly obsessed with SOCKS. They are FUN! You should do them instead :-) I actually posted pics of my latest ones on my blog if you want to see how lame of a knitter i am.

  18. Oh, I love reading! Just read The Red Tent and it was wonderful. I wouldn’t say it’s Chick Lit, but it is about relationships between women and takes place in biblical times.
I agree with Jess about Goodreads. If you like to read and are looking for suggestions - go there.
Haha about your 10 am lunch question. I’d like to know if 1/2 is an o.k. time to eat lunch because I’m usually eating breakfast at 10 and threfore not hungry until 1-2.
I don’t knit, but I scrapbook and I am SOOO slow. I spent the WHOLE weekend scrappin’ and got 5 pages done. NICE!
Your post cracked me up! Thanks for the laughs!
