DIY hair

Filed under: Miscellaneous — Shauna @ 11:20 am

I had before and after pictures, but you really couldn’t see the difference, which is what I hoped for all along. I went to Great Clips for the hair cut, and since the basic shape of my cut was already established, it went fine (although I forgot they don’t bother “styling” your hair after the cut). With the tip, it cost $17 instead of my usual $50.

I colored my hair with Clairol’s Nice & Easy Dark Spice (119C). From start to finish, it took only 63 minutes (including blow drying and styling). Here’s the end result:

I love it – a LOT. It’s a nice shade for my skin tone and it covered my 8 gray hairs nicely. You can’t tell in the photo, but it’s about the shade I already had (without the sun-bleached ends), only when the light hits it, it’s got some great dark red highlights. I went with just the recommended 25 minutes and remembered to use some Vaseline along my hairline and on the tops of my ears, so any drips were a breeze to wipe off. Normally I spend $80 to get my hair colored. This box of hair color? Seven bucks.

Total savings by doing my color myself and getting a cheaper cut? $106.

Hell, yeah. That’s more money to spend on bacon.

  4. It looks GREAT!!!!!

You should swing for a pepperoni and linguica pizza. Almost as good as bacon…but with cheese, sauce, and crust. HEAVEN!

  5. The cut and color are great! Yay! for more bacon. What did the husband think? If my husband doesn’t like my hair, he says nothing. If he likes it, he says something off-hand like “Did you get your hair cut?” Go figure.

  6. It was $17 WITH TIP? My god, man! That is insanity!

It really, really looks great. I like darker on you.

  7. I love it!

I always color my hair at home. $9 for the hairdye and I always get so many compliments on it … I love watching people’s faces when they learn I did it at home!

  10. It looks great! I always color my hair at home too. It would be nice to get it done right, but at 60+ bucks, it’s not going to happen anytime soon.

  12. YAY! Looks great!

If I didn’t have a gal cut my hair who only charges $45 for a cut and color AND lets me bring my kids, I’d totally do it myself too!

  13. I had to wait until I got home to look at the pictures…my stupid work has blocked certain websites so your pictures don’t show up any more! GRAH. Anyhow, it looks fabulous! And you are a gal after my own heart. I am WAY CHEAP when it comes to my hair, which no doubt explains why I haven’t yet gotten those Julia Stiles highlights yet…

  17. Love it! I use Nice and Easy Medium Spice and usually go to Supercuts. So that’s um, less than $30 for what would cost me over $100 at the salon. I have no patience to style or do anything to my hair, so I figure why spend a ton of money on it?
