Annual camp out
We camped last weekend at Jason’s parents’ place. They invite family and friends to park their campers and pitch their tents on their property. It’s a great time. Also, Jason’s grandma makes the best hotdish EVER.
Jason’s parents go all out with this annual camp out - they have an inflatable bounce house and waterslide for the kids, and they even make their own badges. Hee.
I made corn on the cob cupcakes for Jason’s mom’s birthday. So fun. Although I had to go to FOUR places to find the corn skewers. Apparently, Target does not think it’s cool to sell skewers in the shape of corncobs. That is the WHOLE POINT of eating corn, Target.
Jason’s mom has a hummingbird feeder. When we were first over there, something buzzed my head and I thought she said, “Oh, a honey bee.” No, a hummingbird. They didn’t even care that we were standing right there. Instead, they preferred to zip and flit around, making teeny Yamaha-motor noises.
This was my favorite part of the weekend. Standing there openmouthed with Jason, grinning like kids whenever one would swoop down to the feeder. I replicated the nectar recipe (one part sugar, 4 parts water) with our feeder and do we have hummingbirds yet? No. NO, WE DO NOT.
It rained off and on, but that was OK, because 1) we desperately needed it, 2) Jason and I watched some lightning clouds move across the night sky while holding hands and 3) rainbows.
Note that I am wearing a sweatshirt. Hello, nearly July weather! You disappoint me. But this weekend we’re going camping again and it’s supposed to be 85. IT BETTER BE.

OMG, you have to tell me how you made the cupcakes. Are those jellybeans? What kind? They look awesome. Also, I agree with the corncob sticker things. How are you supposed to know what they are for if they aren’t shaped just like it!?
You guys are too cute. I hope you have good weather this weekend!

Becky, I just used a yellow cake mix for the cupcakes with vanilla frosting. Then I used yellow and white Jelly Bellies for the corn, and yellow Starbursts for the butter. The original recipe called for black and white decorating sugars for salt and pepper, but I couldn’t find any.

Great picture of you two…was it really cool enough for a sweatshirt? It’s three shades hotter than hell here in south MS!

I LOVE those cupcakes!! I had the corn kernels pegged as jelly beans but I couldn’t figure out what the pats of butter were — yellow starbursts…GENIUS! (PS you can usually find decorating sugars at Michael’s or any crafts store) The camping trip sounds so fun. You got such great pics — I can never get good shots of the hummingbirds. They’re too quick! ~LA

If I made those cupcakes they would be lopsided and they would definitely not look like corn on the cob corn shaped holders or not! They are awesome!

You should go in the cupcake making business, lady!

Shauna, you may want to add some red food coloring to your hummingbird nectar. They are attracted by the red color, as seen by their attraction to red hummingbird vines and red poker plants. You can do away with the color after they’ve found your feeder. And I love the cupcakes! At first, I thought you’d found some new mutant corn cobs! Such a great idea.

My mom has hummingbird feeders too, and she told me it took her nearly two seasons of putting them out and filling them before the hummingbirds came, but they’ve been coming back for years now. They provided loads of entertainment for the cat, who would wait patiently near the window and them jump at them (Garfield-car-decoration style) whenever they would approach.

The cupcakes! Brilliant! I’m totally going to do that for our next family gathering!
Also, we were wearing jackets this weekend for a bit. I don’t remember it being this cold still in July.

Those cupcakes are amazing. It is brilliant and clever people like you who make me think “ach, no point to signing up to bring dessert to the potluck. I’ll bring the paper goods!”
