boomerangs

I am such a creature of habit. I love doing the same thing on the same day of the week (No-TV Wednesdays), I love going camping at the same places every summer, and I love seeing things from my past come back into my life periodically. It makes me really happy.

Like this dress:

I bought this dress at Ann Taylor back in 1999. I remember feeling all fancy paying good money for it. And, it’s a size 6. Note: I am not a size 6 anymore. But this dress still fits. It’s my go-to dress for weddings, funerals, feeling spunky at work, whatever. A little pick-me-up that never goes out of style. And last weekend I was a bridesmaid in a nice outdoor wedding where the bride said, “Just wear a black dress.” DONE.

Our backyard ducks:

They’re back. We had them last year for awhile and they’re living in our yard again. I scared them away earlier with my aggressive picture-taking and polite conversations asking them to leave for 30 minutes so we could mow the lawn, but they returned. The female always arrives first, strutting gracefully, while the male makes his wobbly landing right next to our raspberry bush.

This dude:

I am eagerly awaiting more of these. I think it’s a cecropia moth caterpillar. This guy lived colorfully in our bushes last year, and every day I’d check his hiding spot to make sure he was comfortable. He was HUGE and very easygoing; I named him Harold. I hope he told his buddies all about our nice yard accommodations.

And finally, the godforsaken seashells:

They keep showing up. I have literally reduced the size of our bushes by 90%, and there is NO WAY a seashell would go unnoticed. But yet I am still finding them.

Maybe they’re from the ducks.

  1. Oh, I love it when things come back, too. And I think you might be on to something with the seashell mystery. Those ducks totally look guilty.

  2. I just can’t get over it. The seashell thing is very weird.

And I have NEVER seen a caterpillar like that before. Is that what it is? A cecropia? I have never heard of this. They must not live in Texas.

  3. Dude, is that your GRASS? It looks like TURF! That is some killer grass, man.

I’m going to need you to set up a webcam in your bushes, because this mystery cannot go unsolved.

  4. This seashell thing is crazy! Also, I know I’ve said this before, but I love your hair like that. It just looks SO GOOD.

  5. I am with Tessie on the webcam. I need to know where those shells are coming from.

    So there’s Jason’s lady friend!!

We had a momma bunny and 6 babies in our yard the summer that Lucy was turning one. I hoped that she would return last summer, but she did not. No luck this year either.

  6. I have to agree with the comments about your hair. You are gorgeous!

  7. That sea shell thing is just freaky. It is probably your husband messing with you!! That would require major retribution ;)

I love that you named the caterpillar. I name every little critter that sicks around. We had a massive spider last year and I am named it Spidey (original, eh?!) This year I think Spidey’s off spring is up there and I decided to name her Charlotte though it seems it should be reversed but whatever. I also named a pair of squirrels here at work – Bertha and Robert (incidentally those are the same names of the squirrels that lived in a tree behind an apt. we lived in a few years back. In another city…)

  8. purdy dress. that caterpillar is AWESOME. (so is the photograph of it, incidentally.) are you sure it’s not, like, an evil caterpillar? that eats your fancy plants or something?

  9. The seashells WOULD be a good way to mess with someone’s head. A web cam is definitely in order.

  10. LOVE the dress! I need one like that. I’ve got 24 nieces and nephews and a bunch of them are hitting the marrying age (I’m not THAT old – I’m the second-to-youngest of the in-laws, so a lot of their kids are only about 10-15 years younger than I am.), so I need something to wear to all of them. I don’t mind wearing the same dress to every wedding; it’ll give people something to talk about. One of my sisters-in-law wears the same dress to every christening.

Also, the picture of the caterpillar is AWESOME! My grandfather’s name was Harold. He didn’t look anything like that. I would’ve been the coolest kid on the block if he had.

  11. Ann Taylor is all about the vanity sizing. I have a dress that, according to the tag, should be 4 sizes to small. And yet, it fits perfectly. I don’t mind.

  12. You guys look great in that picture! I have a similar black dress – LOVE IT. I feel like Audrey Hepburn in it, and that has to be the best feeling in the whole world. It doesn’t fit me anymore. :-(

That is just awesome about the ducks! And I love that you know where the male lands. Goofy boys.

Is it strange that I could actually see you checking on Harold in my mind?

  13. GO DUCKS! I love that they’ve picked your yard for their summer home. You might need to charge them rent – just make sure to do first & last; ducks can be horribly unreliable. Come to think of it, a security deposit might be in order, as well.

  14. Can I just tell you that I had a dream about your ducks last night? I must have looked at your post before I went to bed and I dreamed that I was in some sort of camp where a serial killer was running rampant, and I was hiding with a random Italian family in a goat cheese refrigerator (?!) when someone realized that we left the ducks in the road! So someone had to sneak out of the fridge, avoid the serial killer and save the ducks! And then I woke up.

  15. Stephanie, that is weird, especially since I ALSO dreamed about a serial killer last night. SPOOKY.
