Well, everybody’s heard about the bird

Filed under: Miscellaneous — Shauna @ 12:08 pm

(Note: all photos were taken by Becky, Jason’s mom)

Scene: Becky and Bob’s bedroom window

Time: 5:00 a.m.

Cardinal: [singing loudly]

Becky: Wow, that is LOUD!

Cardinal: I know! My singing has been measured at 90 decibels, which is the equivalent of standing on a subway platform!

Becky: I guess I’m up now.

Cardinal: Good! Now you can feed me.

Becky: Wonder what he wants? There’s already plenty of bird food out there.

Cardinal: Yeah, yeah, the suet and sunflower seeds are great, but I want peanuts!

Becky: [ignores bird]

Cardinal: Did you hear me? PEANUTS!

Becky: [still ignoring bird]

Cardinal: [starts tapping on bedroom window]

Becky: You’ve got to be kidding me.

Cardinal: TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP. PEANUTS! TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP.

Becky: I’m going in my office.

Cardinal, still near bedroom window: TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP.

Cardinal, now in office window: Hello! You can run, but you can’t hide! Did you enjoy my tapping?

Becky: Oh my god.

Cardinal: It took me years of training to build up my endurance. Would you care to hear another piece? It’s titled, “BRING ME SOME PEANUTS RIGHT NOW OR I WILL TAP RIGHT THROUGH YOUR SANITY.”

Cardinal: TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP.

Becky: [ignores cardinal; attempts to work]

Cardinal: I won’t be ignored, lady!

  1. That is soooo nuts! (Pun not intended, but I am quite pleased with it so I will keep it.)

    Look how green everything is…..

    This is just too funny.

  3. Cardinals are very odd birds. My grandmother in Florida had one that decided he had to ALWAYS look at himself in the side mirrors of her car. Then he would tab on the mirror. I am sorry about Becky’s problem.

  7. Damn birds!!! We just had a cardinal couple build a nest in one of our bushes. The eggs hatched but when the babies were a couple days old, they got too big for the poorly secured next and when I woke up the next morning the nest was on the ground and the babies were gone. I choose to believe the parents relocated them.

  12. O.M.G. That is freaking hysterical. My favorite pic by far is of the bird looking into the window but that is followed closely by the crazy BIRDS (as in the movie) drama of flying like he is going to attack her and DAMMIT get those peanuts!

  16. This freaks the hell out of me!! I am terrified of birds. Your MIL needs to move. STAT!

  17. Yes, the bird that never shuts up when it wants something. Usually sunflower seeds will do the trick, but if they started following me through the house and tap-tap-tapping I might be looking up Bird Exorcists in the yellow pages.

  18. Penny,

He’s back EVERY morning! To be honest, he never leaves! He goes from window to window all day long. He gives us peace at night, but starts up again at 5:00 AM…every morning!

  19. That is one persistent bird. Persistent and SCARY. My rule of thumb is when they start to FOLLOW YOU AROUND THE HOUSE they have gone beyond “cute woodland creature” to “scary stalking woodland creature”. Wow.

  20. That is totally freaky, but funny because it didn’t happen to me (although your MIL has an awesome name).

    Comment by Becky — May 14, 2008 @ 10:23 am

  21. Your narrative is hilarious. Also, who knew wild birds would tap on the window as humans snap pictures of them – very odd/scary!

    Comment by Stephanie — May 14, 2008 @ 1:14 pm

  22. This cracked me up. You have to hand it to the bird for having a decent strategy. I’m pretty sure that tapping right through someone’s sanity is the preferred method of shrewd go-getters everywhere.
