Spaced out

Filed under: Miscellaneous — Shauna @ 7:40 am

Hi, do you notice anything different? YOU BETTER because I spent about 6 hours trying to figure out how to change the color of the “comments” link. And do you know what the problem was, after I carefully scanned my CSS coding line by line by line (oh, so many lines!)?

A semicolon was missing. One tiny semicolon. CHEESE AND CRACKERS.

Anyway, all this diddling around trying to fix one stupid color meant I didn’t have time to update other (some might say “more important”) things, like the ‘About Us’ page or the ‘Contact Us’ page.

(It’s like opening a brand-new clothing store, advertising for the grand opening, and then saying when people show up, “Here it is! Now come back when we have actual merchandise!”)

So, sorry about that. But here’s the new template and masthead. I’ll be fine-tuning the other pages soon (with new pictures of us and our crazy little household, featuring photos of our GIGANTOR™ 12-Cent Goldfish, who sent me a poorly written memo that stated: “HEY LADEE. WE PART OF FAMILEE TWO. TALK ‘BOUT US!”).

Anyway, this template’s spaciousness reminds me of that Seinfeld episode where Kramer repaints the freeway lines, turning a 4-lane highway into a 2-lane highway. (“So luxurious!”)

Am I babbling? I think I am. But at least now I have the ROOM to do so.

P.S. ONE TINY SEMICOLON! SIX HOURS! CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT? GOD.

  2. It really is so…WIDE! In fact, I have like a FOOT of space here in the comments! I’m still typing on the same line!

    Anyway. Love it!

  3. I love it so much Shauna that I’m going to throw you my favorite intergalactic pick-up line: is that spacepants you’re wearing because your ass is out of this world!

  7. Um, it’s beautiful. BEAUTIFUL. And I’m a tad jealous.

Also, normally I love semicolons, but today? DAMN THEM.

  8. Ohh this is FANCY! Love it!!!

I always did hate semicolons btw!

Must redo my blog ASAP. Everyone is cooler than me.

  10. Oh! I like! And the space for comments IS very luxurious!!

Ugh, six freaking hours for ONE semicolon? This is why I let my husband do all of those fun behind-the-scenes stuff for my blog. I would never, ever have found that semicolon.

  11. Wahoo Shauna!! I’d say it was 6 hours well spent because this new blog world you have created is luxurious and fabulous. Shall I mention again that I am jealous?
Teach me your skills for I have none.

  13. Very, very nice. And if you will email me your address, I will send you my copy of The Road, if you insist on reading that horrible book. I will not permit you to buy a copy. That horrible man has made enough money on it already. My email address is sm_rl@hotmail.com.

  14. This is fantastic! That spaceship looks like a robotic cat. I think you should name it Tonks. That last sentence may not make sense to some people. Or any people at all. Very cool new template.

  15. Woooooo!!!!!!!

Semicolon, smemicolon. I’m glad I’m married to a Web Developer.

    Comment by Shannon — May 1, 2008 @ 10:02 am

  16. JMC,

Heh. I got the Tonks reference. But I voted for Fleur!

    Everyone,

Um…the comments box wasn’t supposed to be THAT luxuriously wide. I apparently DELETED huge strings of code, which I found in my Fussypants Word doc, where I anal-rententively saved the original code. Whew!

  17. WHAT! Shauna! I FORBID YOU TO READ THE ROAD!

  18. Tessie,

Too late. Shelly’s got my mailing address! WHAT HAVE I DONE?

    Comment by Shauna — May 1, 2008 @ 10:13 am

  19. Oh, how fun! I looks great, Shauna. It is very spacious, and I like the look of the links on the right. And what a fancypants header! Woo hoo!

    Pretty, pretty orange.

Both your and Black Sheeped’s efforts make me itch to purchase my own domain and really dig into laying out my own site.

I have to remind myself that projects like that — that inevitably will consume entire days of my life — have to wait until after The Thesis is finished.

Damn you, Thesis! [violently shaking clenched fist in the air and grimacing]

Also, I love the “Cheese and Crackers” reference. My grandpa says this all the time! I’ve thought of using it in posts, but wondered if anyone would get it. At least I know YOU will.

  20. It looks fantastic Shauna with a U! I love it.

  21. I’m waiting for all the penis jokes. WHERE ARE THEY?

Fine, I’ll do it. It’s so huge! It’s so wide! It’s so…orange (comment link), It’s so beeeaaautiful.

    Good work miss.

  23. Fantastic new look. I love the header.

  24. I have spent more time than that looking for a missing semicolon, and then begging all my former coworkers for tranquilizers.

Terrific revision, and the masthead is SUPERB. It’s the best one yet.

Do you give lessons on having a weird pickle/bacon/dime brain full of creativity, or were you just born with Photoshop in your hand and that’s why your mom had a C-section?

    Comment by pixelpi — May 1, 2008 @ 3:59 pm

  25. PixelPi (and everyone else),

Thank you for the nice comments!

The truth is, everything I’ve learned about Photoshop is from googling whatever it is I wanted to do, and then reading through tutorials. Same with any PHP coding I do – all Google. Thank god for google.

Some day I hope to learn how to create my own website, design and all, from scratch so I don’t have to spend time customizing existing themes and searching for missing semicolons.

  26. Awesome! I can never see your photos or masthead when I check from work, so I had to make a mental note to return once I was on my home computer.

    Comment by My Buddy Mimi — May 1, 2008 @ 7:42 pm

  27. Very, very cool.

    Comment by amber — May 1, 2008 @ 9:40 pm

  28. I’m just so impressed that you taught yourself how to do this stuff. My husband is a software programmer, so he basically holds me hand through every tiny little thing, and even then I have hysterics. I have GOT to stop being so afraid of coding, etc., and just jump in there and figure it out!
I do like the new look very much, btw. It’s FAR OUT. Hee.
