Day of the Fri

Filed under: Miscellaneous, Pets — Shauna @ 9:32 am

I have been working on a children’s book post for quite awhile, but it turns out that clip art does not exist for the main component of the story. Looks like I will have to put my incredibly awful drawing skills to use this weekend!

Ever since the weather finally turned the corner and the color of our lawn increased its saturation by 300%, and we pulled the plastic from our windows so we could stop living like hibernating bears, I’ve been slowly walking around our yard every night when I get home from work. The lilacs are beginning to bud, the trees have buds, the yellow spots in our lawn are miraculously filling in with live grass, and my daylilies are poking through the soil like new teeth.

However, there is an abnormally large quantity of rabbit poop on our Misshapen Bushes™ and quite a few broken branches, which means I now have a better view of all the junk that somehow accumulates in those things. In the past I have found old plastic Easter eggs, plenty of sidewalk chalk, a plastic lizard, a puppy sticker and about 37 tennis balls. But on Monday, I found a seashell – in perfect condition. I pocketed it and fully examined the rest of the bushes. The next day I found another seashell, precisely the same size and in the same spot as the one I found the day before. I pocketed that one too. Then a few days ago, I found yet another seashell. I don’t know where these are coming from. As far as I know, we are roughly 1,500 miles from the nearest ocean.

Pictures!

Because we are fancy people, we insist the cats cross their paws while lounging on tables they’re not supposed to be on.

(Also, someone needs to get their claws trimmed, because good lord, the Tap Dancing Revue at 4 a.m. was unwelcome.)

For 37 tuna snacks, I’ll tell you who’s leaving those seashells in the yard. No? Fine, continue to think you’re losing your mind then.

  1. Hahaha. I love the pictures (and captions) of your cats. Also…bizarre about the seashells. I hope you let us know when/if you figure it out.

I knew you were in MN (can’t remember which entry tipped me off, but the Twins game entries are definitely giveaways ;-) ). We are getting hitched on June 7th. Only 6 weeks! Eeek!

  3. oh my god, that would totally drive me insane trying to figure it out… i vote you get a cheap security system and tape your back yard until you know what’s going on.

  4. Okay, the shells are WEIRD. I want to know the answer. NOW.

  5. It’s like our missing wreath! Where did it go? Maybe to the place your shells came from!

  7. Ok, the shell thing is super weird. Maybe it’s a leprechaun?

  8. You have a seashell Fairy! Awesome.

  9. It was ME, I must have drug them from Texas and then accidentally deposited them in your bushes while I was looking in your windows!

We once set up a webcam to find out what our dogs did during the day while we were at work (answer: nothing but lay on the couch).

  11. The lilacs are one thing I actually miss about living in the great white north. I love the smell when the bloom every spring.

  12. You’re pretty stingy with the tuna snacks!

  13. Tessie,

That is so awesome about setting up a webcam! I want to do that because I think the stupid neighbor kids hang out in our yard (the backyard, which has a fence and a gate).

When I got to work from home for a week, the cats did nothing but sleep. Which totally explains why they are ready to party at 4:00 a.m.

  14. The seashell thing is weird. Try Tessie’s webcam idea and point it at the bushes. I’ll provide the tuna snacks for the answer, if it comes to that.

  15. Wow, the seashell thing is very weird. I would be forced to investigate further. I think a webcam is definitely in order!

I am quite sure that the only thing my pets do is sleep during the day. Unless I am at home for some reason, then the dog paces frantically and begs to be let out every .34678 seconds.

  16. I agree that the formal crossing of paws is required when any cat is on a forbidden surface.

And I don’t think they really know about the shells, but are just trying to cheat you out of tuna treats. They have such small brains, completely devoted to getting everything they want.

Breathlessly awaiting new children’s book episode. You do realize these are going to become famous on the internets, don’t you?

The only thing that smells better than fresh grass or lilacs is mimosa trees. My neighbor has one, and sometimes I just go stand under it pretending to do something to the brown pine needles in that corner.

  17. Hmm. Maybe someone in your family is playing a trick on you? Or Jason, even? Because seashells shouldn’t just be popping up in your yard. It’s weird. And now it’s reeeallly going to bug me.
