Let us partake of this delicious goat, amen

Filed under: Food — Shauna @ 12:43 pm

Yesterday we went to my aunt’s for Easter. We were the last to arrive, even though we were a half hour early. As we straggled in carrying our deviled eggs and Easter baskets, my aunt greeted us with, “Would you like to try some goat?”

At first I wasn’t sure I heard her correctly, and my brain speedily cycled through other alphabetically possible variations: boat, coat, moat, tote, vote? Then I saw her holding out a giant ladle filled with some grayish meat: goat.

After Jason (who is a very picky eater) and I (ditto) exchanged startled glances, we shrugged and said, “Sure.”

My other aunt began dishing up alarmingly huge hunks of meat into a bowl with some au jus. My brother received his bowl and asked nervously, “Do you…uh…have a piece that’s…uh…smaller?”

As my aunt explained that her boyfriend from Kenya prepared the meat, I sniffed it cautiously. It smelled OK, and it looked OK. Plus, I once ate a night crawler during a family version of “Fear Factor,” so what the heck, right?

Then I tasted it. And as everyone else said things like, “Tastes like beef!” or “That’s GOOD!” I thought, “This tastes exactly like GOAT.” It was very goat-y. I’m not sure if it was the meat or the juice, but as I chewed, the image of a filthy goat with a dirt-matted tail entered my mind. Blech.

But the ham was delicious.

  2. I recently went on a hike where the trail was overrun by goats (long story) and the whole area just smelled…goat-y. Like goat cheese. It was totally odd. And I’ve not been able to eat goat cheese with the same gusto since. (But good for you for being polite and eating it!)

  3. My MIL’s boyfriend tried to get me to eat roasted pigeon one time. Dude - I don’t eat chicken, what makes you think I would even consider pigeon?

And, goats are skinny, which I wouldn’t think would be the best for a juicy meat. Ew.

  4. Torsten loves goat beyond all reason. It is my fervent hope that we never, ever, ever enter into such a situation.

  6. We used to go to an Indian buffet that has Goat as one of the options. I would NEVER have ordered it off the menu if I hadn’t tried it in the buffet first, but goat curry was actually quite good.

  8. They’re big on the goat in Texas. Cabrito- Mexicans make it a lot. Never had it. Never will. Because when I taste it for the first time? I know I will think it tastes goat-y too.

  10. Oh Lordy, this brought back memories. My aunt used to raise and butcher goats, so I have had my share of goat burgers. The best was when she’d fix some unsuspecting sap up a tasty cheeseburger and then tell them casually, “Yep, that’s Bessie there. One of my best milkers, but had to have her butchered this spring- got such a raging case of mastitis.” Or some such terrifying table talk.

  13. We have goats. (No, this will not be a “And they are part of the family” comment.) I would never eat them, for they are dirty and stupid. The babies are cute, though.

  14. Can I please just dwell on the words, ‘family fear-factor?’ Because off-hand remarks like THAT are what make me want to really really meet you. :)

    Goat: EW.

  16. My only experience with goat was with goat’s milk as a child, which I hated. Really, really hated. But my sister has a worse aversion–when she was first married, they lived in a condo, with each condo having a patio separated by a privacy fence. Once day there was blood running over her patio and she just freaked out–until she found out the family next door had just slaughtered dinner.

And your image of the goat-y-ness was great, especially the rear end. Nope. Not in this lifetime.

  17. My question is where the hell did your aunt even GET a goat to eat on Easter? Did they slaughter it themselves? Because last time I checked, they don’t sell goat at the grocery store.
