Tales from the inbox

Filed under: BACON!, Miscellaneous — Shauna @ 1:26 pm

We don’t get a whole lot of emails to Pickles & Dimes, but yesterday we hit the jackpot.

First up from Tessie was an email informing me about the existence of The Bacon Weave. Is this name not fantastic in every way? (Unless you’re thinking of a hair weave, in which case: eeewwww.) I excitedly investigated further and found detailed instructions for making your own here.

(It totally counts as one piece that way, too.)

Next was an email from Edith. She wrote:

Dear Shauna,

I accidentally found your site today while on a google search for something cat-related. Let’s just say the google search was prompted by my 5-month-old calico kitten dragging her little bottom across the carpet and leaving evidence behind. Eeeeewwww! I was not happy.

In fact, my mood was black when I opened up my web browser. But then I came across Pickles & Dimes. And I stayed. And your writing style was so gloriously inviting, that I read on….and on…..and on. And now I am actually smiling, and my blood pressure has returned to normal. And I am casting warm and forgiving glances in my cat’s direction, so I think the day is gonna be alright after all.

I just wanted to say thank you.

Your humor saved my morning. I have bookmarked your blog and will return soon to read more. :)

I am not lying when I say this is the best email I have ever received. To get an unsolicited compliment from a complete stranger who took the time to write just made my entire week. Thank you, Edith.

From now on I’m going to try to thank someone whenever I see something I appreciate or admire.

Our life: a children’s book, vol. 3

We’ll be working on Jason’s version of a children’s story probably sometime this weekend. It’s hilarious, so keep your eyes peeled.

In the meantime, the following happened to me yesterday and practically begged to be presented in this format. Previous entries can be found here.

“YAY! IT IS FINALLY TIME TO GO HOME,” says the work clock.

“BRRR. IT IS MINUS FIVE DEGREES OUTSIDE,” says the bank thermometer outside of work.

Photobucket

“HA. YOU THOUGHT I WOULD TURN GREEN, DIDN’T YOU?” says the crosswalk light.

Photobucket

“HI,” says Shauna’s car doors. “UM…WE CANNOT OPEN. WE’RE FROZEN, ACTUALLY.”

Open sesame

Filed under: Miscellaneous — Shauna @ 11:10 am

Yesterday it was 40 degrees. I finally had the weather-cooperating opportunity to wash my car. And after I washed my car, I could actually see out of my windshield! And my headlights actually penetrated the darkness!

And then I came home and parked the car in the garage, careful to leave the doors unlocked so they wouldn’t freeze like last time.

And then this morning, Jason & I skipped working out because the bed was warm and toasty and Jason could actually sleep in, and I got ready while Sunny snuggled underneath the covers with him, only her snout visible. And while I was drying my hair, Abby decided that I needed to pet her - right that minute - and started scratching her invisible claws on my jeans, so I sat on the bathmat and petted her as she performed her weird Martian meow-talking while headbutting me and making out with the vanity door.

And then I bade Jason a pleasant day and went outside, where the temperature had dropped approximately 57 degrees overnight and I pushed the garage door opener…and nothing.

The garage door had frozen to the ground.

Hello, Tuesday that I thought was Wednesday. Monday sent you, didn’t it?

Jason helped me pour pitchers of hot water around the door, which worked both quickly and like a charm, but I’m not confident that I won’t have to repeat that action once I get home from work tonight and seriously, THOUGHT IT WAS WEDNESDAY.

Masthead #15 – Vintage bacon

I made this masthead eons ago (I’m set with mastheads through May). One of the nice things about working for a design firm/agency is that we have unlimited access to royalty-free images. I’m pretty sure that’s where I got the overly excited woman with the freakishly long index finger.

I created the starburst myself and just threw some lines for the background, and used images instead of typography for the title. Pretty simple (or lazy).

Anyway, it’s my opinion that you can never go wrong mentioning bacon in a masthead.
