First dance
Look, I promise this will be the last entry about wedding stuff, but besides, the big day is only 9 days away and then I’ll be gone on the honeymoon, so you’ll finally have blissful, blissful SILENCE.
(Until I bore you with pictures.)
Anyway, we are not having a DJ at our wedding and instead, are using an iPod, which Jason’s music- and tech-savvy dad is hooking up for us with speakers. Last night, Jason and I finished organizing our playlist into a somewhat reasonable “fast song-slow song” order (actually, Jason did most of the work while I “helped” by playing tag with Abby and making sure he didn’t bury Haddaway’s “What is Love” and Heavy D & the Boyz’s “Now That We Found Love” at the end, because I am going to dance badly (on purpose) to them).
For our first song, we were originally going to use Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World,” but somehow, we ended up hearing Shooter Jennings’ “My Song For You,” and that became our first song.
So…for those of you who are married, what was your first song? And if you’re not married or eloped or didn’t have a dance, what would you like for your first song?

I am not married (yet…June, 2008), but I just had to comment and say that I LOVE Shooter Jennings. I have seen him in concert here in MN (and in Iowa) a couple of times, and he puts on a great show. So congrats on picking a great (and unique!) first dance song.

Due to my “non-tradition” wedding plans, our dance will most likely be in private, but the song for us is “All The Right Reasons” by The Jayhawks.

I think our first song is going to be These Arms of Mine by Otis Redding.

ps. I just read some more of your blog history and realized that you are in MN too. Awesome. I thought all the bloggers lived out on the East Coast.

I’m embarrassed to admit I forget what our first song was. It was something big band that we could swing dance to. Since the Mr and I sort of used swing dancing as an excuse to date (though we couldn’t admit it), it was somewhat of a sentimental thing.

I find “Now That We Found Love” to be the perfect Electric Slide song. Um. For OTHER PEOPLE, obviously.
We had…What a Wonderful World. Great minds, and also people who like pickles, think alike.

We did “Only You” - The Flying Pickets. I got married 10 years ago, but I would still have that song today!

We didn’t have a dancy wedding, but I made sure our first song played was Hotel Yorba by the White Stripes.

I was just thinking about this because my sister had the same first song as my parents, “Sunrise, Sunset” from Fiddler on the Roof, but it’s a song that I don’t want. Which may be awkward. As of yet, I haven’t brought it up. I thought maybe I’d wait until I figured out what I do want and then present that to them as an alternative. This is one of the frustrating things about not being the first daughter to get married.

If A. and I decide to quit living in sin just get legal already, I’d really like our first song to be “True Companion” by Marc Cohn.
But I am envisioning a keg/potluck in the park, so dancing might be out.

My sister is getting married in 3 weeks and I’ve been watching her ever-changing music list for months. I still don’t know what the first song will be.
But even after months of begging, she has yet to add “Rock Lobster” and/or “Burning Down the House” as 80s dance tunes. I personally think it would be fun to dance to Rock Lobster. She apparently doesn’t.

You guys all have sweet first songs! Keep ‘em coming!

We did “How Sweet It Is” by Marvin Gaye. My dance with my father was “What a Wonderful World” though. So yes, both oldies, but good ones. Really I’m only 33 years old.
Our friends did the same with their iPod at their wedding but had some kind of problem with the power/battery/charger/connector… Either way we had a few minutes of silence while they figured it out.

I just wanted to say how thrilled I am that you’re using Haddaway’s “What is Love†and Heavy D & the Boyz’s “Now That We Found Love” for some good times. Man, those songs bring back happy college memories.

I am a freelance wedding planner and I often recommend the IPod instead of a DJ. It’s a great money saver and you guarantee that all the songs are songs you want to listen to. I was married in June of last year and our first song was Lullaby by the Dixie Chicks (sounds awful, but really, it’s a very sweet song)
P.S. let me know if you have any wedding planning questions
I’m glad to help! I LOVE weddings!

The iPod is a great idea. Shooter Jennings is cool too (I don’t know that song though). I want me and my sweetie’s first song to be “God Only Knows” by The Beach Boys. It’s “our” song, for some reason. Probably because the lyrics are kinda messed up, excessively realistic and analytic, and full of irony because he’s an atheist.

Our first song is Feels Like Home by Chantal Kreviazuk.
I wanted The Way I Are by Timbaland but Tom 86′ed it. Sigh.

I’m not married or engaged, but I want our song to be “You Make My Dreams Come True” by Hall and Oates. Not sure how you would dance to it though…Or maybe “For Once in My Life” by Stevie Wonder.

You guys all had great songs! I need to update my iPod, I think.

We danced our first dance to At Last, by Ella Fitzgerald. Our theme for music was oldies Jazz so it went very well.
